Certified Peer Support Specialist/Operation Support

Deon Shipman is a Certified Peer Support Specialist with formal training in WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan), serving as the Peer Support Supervisor at The Ship Group Behavioral Health & Community Services. He brings powerful lived expertise to his work, shaped by his own journey of recovery and reintegration as a returning citizen.

Having overcome substance use challenges and navigated reentry following justice involvement, Deon leads with authenticity, compassion, and a deep understanding of the barriers faced by individuals in similar situations. His life experience has become a tool of empowerment—allowing him to mentor others with credibility and care.

Deon previously worked in the New York City shelter system, supporting individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health conditions, and complex social needs. This frontline experience strengthened his ability to engage vulnerable populations, build trust, and connect people with the resources they need.

At The Ship Group, Deon supervises the delivery of peer support services within the Pathway to Renewal (P2R) framework, ensuring that supports are trauma-informed, strength-based, and person-centered. He plays an essential role in mentoring Peer Support Specialists, guiding wellness planning, and fostering recovery environments rooted in hope and mutual respect.

Deon is currently pursuing his Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor (CDAC) credential, further expanding his clinical foundation and commitment to long-term service in behavioral health.
