Family and relationship counseling helps people understand patterns, communicate more effectively and respond to stress together. Services may involve parents, caregivers, couples or other important family members based on clinical need and consent.

How This Service Can Help

Care is individualized. Your assessment and treatment plan determine the goals, frequency and services that are appropriate for you.

Communication

Practice listening, expressing needs, setting boundaries and resolving conflict without escalating harm.

Parent & Caregiver Support

Strengthen routines, consistent responses, co-parenting and support for a child or teen’s treatment plan.

Transitions & Stress

Navigate grief, separation, blended families, illness, justice involvement, recovery or other major changes.

Counseling May Help With

  • Frequent conflict, disconnection or communication breakdown
  • Parenting stress and child or adolescent behavioral concerns
  • Rebuilding trust after substance use, trauma or major life events
  • Supporting a family member with mental-health or medical needs

What to Expect

  • The clinician identifies who should participate and what goals are appropriate
  • Sessions focus on patterns and skills rather than assigning blame
  • Individual sessions may be recommended alongside family work
  • Safety concerns may require a different treatment or referral plan

How Care Is Delivered

Family counseling may be offered by secure telehealth across North Carolina when clinically appropriate, or in person where available. Participants must join from a private setting and follow consent and confidentiality requirements.

Eligibility, Coverage & Scheduling

Coverage varies. Some plans cover family therapy only when it is medically necessary for an identified client’s treatment. Relationship or couples counseling without a covered diagnosis may require self-pay.

The clinician reviews the relationship pattern, individual needs and appropriate treatment format.
