Peer Support Services connect eligible adults with a North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist who uses lived recovery experience, training and practical support to help the person move toward self-directed goals.

How This Service Can Help

Care is individualized. Your assessment and treatment plan determine the goals, frequency and services that are appropriate for you.

Recovery Planning

Identify personal strengths, barriers, wellness goals and the practical steps needed to move forward.

Community Connection

Build confidence using treatment, transportation, benefits, recovery groups, employment and other community resources.

Self-Advocacy

Practice communication, appointment preparation, decision-making and asking for the support you need.

Peer Support May Help With

  • Staying engaged in mental-health or substance-use recovery
  • Rebuilding routines after hospitalization, treatment, incarceration or housing disruption
  • Developing relapse-prevention and wellness strategies
  • Reducing isolation and strengthening natural supports

What to Expect

  • Respectful support from a trained peer specialist rather than a therapist
  • Goals based on what recovery and community living mean to you
  • Practical meetings in the community, office or another approved setting
  • Coordination with your clinical team and care manager when authorized

How Services Are Delivered

Peer support is primarily a face-to-face, recovery-focused service delivered in natural community settings. Limited telehealth may be used only when clinically appropriate and allowed by policy and the person-centered plan.

Eligibility, Coverage & Scheduling

Eligibility depends on age, diagnosis, functional need, assessment, service order, health-plan authorization and county availability. Peer Support is not emergency care and does not replace therapy, medication management or medical treatment.
